There was sooooooooooooooo much trash.

I can't believe that the average American produces about 4.6 pounds of solid trash a day, which is 1,460 lbs. of trash a year per person.
Every day people get rid of billions of tons of trash.  The garbage mainly comes from industry, but it also comes from homes, apartments and schools.
compared to the population of the United States, you will see that as a country, they get rid of about 210 million tons of trash every year. Schools, hospitals, businesses and government agencies also produce a lot of garbage.
